Pharmacists want jobs in MNCs, not shops

Even if chemists heed to government pressure and start employing more pharmacists, it seems unlikely that pharmacy graduates will take up too many jobs at medical stores.
“Since a pharmacy degree is equivalent to an MBBS, graduates are reluctant to work in chemists’ shops. However, if their salary is increased the situation might change,” said Abhay Kumar, president, Indian Pharmacist Association (IPA) adding that 70% of his batchmates went abroad to pursue jobs in multinational pharmaceutical companies.

This year, the state Food and Drug Administration suspended and cancelled licences of 90 chemist shops that did not have a mandatory pharmacist, as per government rules.
Following the drive, the demand for pharmacists has escalated to an extent, with shop owners ready to pay up to Rs30,000 a month to a pharmacy diploma holder, a significant increase from the Rs. 12,000 - Rs. 15,000 a month they offered before.
“Higher salaries are being negotiated and there’s even been some cross-bargaining between two or three shop owners,” said Damji Palan, president of the Retail Drug Chemist Association.
The problem most graduate or undergraduate pharmacy students have with working at a chemist are the dismal salaries. “We have better opportunities in multinational companies. There is no potential for growth while working in a chemist shop, and the huge cost of setting one’s own pharmacy makes it unfeasible,” said Kunal Parekh, a final year pharmacy student. M Saraf, principal, Bombay College of Pharmacy, Santacruz, said, “While graduate students seek jobs in the pharmaceutical industry, students with a diploma in pharmacy are more likely to work at a shop.”
After the crackdown, one can see several advertisements outside the office of the Maharashtra Pharmacy Council at Mulund from companies looking to hire pharmacists.

Parliamentary panel recommends bringing of CDSCO under Dept of Pharmaceuticals

Parliamentary panel attached to the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers has asked the Ministry to take up urgently the matter of bringing the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) under the administrative purview of the Department of Pharmaceuticals for better check on quality of drugs.

Bringing back the contentious issue into focus, the standing committee headed by Gopinath Munde said the monitoring the quality of drugs and check on spurious drugs are interlinked with pricing and availability of drugs.

“The Department of Pharmaceuticals (DoP) may not be able to do full justice to its role regarding pricing and availability of drugs if the quality control set up does not come within its purview. The Committee, therefore, desire that the DoP should take up the matter regarding bringing the quality control and regulatory mechanism under one umbrella i.e. the DoP,” according to a recent report.

The debate has been going on for some time now over the issue. The DoP itself had taken up the matter with the Cabinet secretariat and the Prime Minister’s Office, clearly stating that the CDSCO may be brought under the DoP.

Pushing the matter to the PMO, Lok Sabha member Dr Sujan Chakraborty had also written to the Prime Minister some time back with the same demand. He pointed out that the very creation of the DoP was to bring all important functions under the single Department to facilitate growth of pharma industry. If the CDSCO was not brought under DoP, the very purpose of the DoP would remain unfulfilled, he said.

The DoP, in its submission to the PMO, also claimed that as the issues relating to pricing, availability and quality of medicines are closely interlinked, CDSCO should be a part of the DoP so that it may be able to play its role more effectively to achieve its main objective to ensure availability of life saving drugs at, reasonable prices as envisaged in the drug policy.

“Quality is an essential parameter while considering the pricing and availability of medicines. In the absence of jurisdiction over the issue of quality of medicines, the DoP finds itself handicapped to do full justice to the role assigned to it. It is, therefore, extremely important to bring the quality control set up under the DoP,” the department conveyed to the PMO.

“Since the function of price control and the administrative control of National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) is already vested with the Department, this Department would be well equipped to address the significant issues related to the Pharmaceuticals,” it said.

PharmD course emphasized by Prof B.Suresh during Chhattisgarh visit

A NATIONAL seminar on Future of Pharmacy Profession in Chhattisgarh: Challenges Ahead was held on Feb 1st  2013 in Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University. Prof B Suresh. was the chief guest.Prof S K Pandey, Vice-Chancellor of the university and Dr P G Shrotiya, Member of Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission were also present.

Prof B Suresh  emphasized that Doctor of Pharmacy is such an advanced course by qualifying which a pharmacist can greatly help the doctors and patients regarding safe use of medicines. All the states in country which are advanced in terms of educational experiment are running this course. It is presently not run in Chhattisgarh. Pharmaceutical industry is changing fast and new products are coming frequently in the market. The pharmacists should know as to how much the new medicines are beneficial for the people and whether they have any side effects.

The pharmacy students were advised that learning is a life-long process and it was also stressed that universities, institutions and associations in the country should support learning after qualifications. The need of Research Incubator in universities was also highlighted. It was focused in the context that institutions support education of student till the completion of course. The lab facilities and guidance are given till the completion. In case any qualified candidate has any idea, but not resources to materialise it... then institutions may not support such persons. Research incubator means such qualified persons Should he allowed to use the lab of universities so that they can go ahead with their ideas. It was also focused that pharmacists are associated with the health sector, but they are working isolation. They should be connected with doctors and patients. It was also stressed that teaching and learning prospects should be looked from global point of view.  expressed their views.

CHIEF Minister Dr Raman Singh has assured that the State Government will welcome proposals for establishing pharmaceutical industries in the State and he has also said that the pharmaceutical sector is also in the priority list of the Government. This was told by Prof B Suresh, President of the Pharmacy Council of India, who had a meeting with the Chief Minister. Prof Suresh further informed that the need of improving the pay-scale of pharmacists in the state government services and also their quality enhancement were expressed to Dr Singh. The Chief Minister assured that if suggestions are made in this regard then the State government will look into the suggestions with open mind, said Prof Suresh.

Indian doctors need to promote prescribing drugs by their generic names

Do you ever compare prices of different brands of medicines before purchase ?
I would suggest that you do it - you will be surprised...!!!

Current Situation of Pharm.D in India.

1) It would be better if the Council makes the CROs and other Clinical/Drug safety related Industries to be aware of Pharm.D and the positions they will be eligible.

2) I have been trying to find an opportunity but some companies say – over qualification but some say – they r looking for MBBS or people with Experience.

3) Pharm.D in India itself is a new course and of course there will be no chance of Experience, then what a Pharm.D can do?
4) In the general public, there are several misunderstandings and even some people are getting confused too.
5) Final thing i would like to mention you is, there is no proper control on Pharma and its career, may be this condition is only for Indian Pharma graduates.
If possible please try to make these things notified by higher authority, WHO CAN BRING SOME CHANGE unless those who listens and says – lets wait, we have other works.
Thank you
